AURORA | The Cherokee Trail boys basketball team was unable to stop a streaking Arapahoe squad in Wednesday night’s Centennial League opener.

The Warriors — ranked No. 6 in Class 6A in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Seeding Index — brought a six-game winning streak and a sparkling 11-2 record into its visit to the Cougars, built an early lead and maintained it the rest of the way for a 49-38 victory.

Coach Brandon Brown’s Cherokee Trail team rallied in spurts, but couldn’t come all the way back as it dropped to 7-7 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

Senior Vince Guthrie paced the Cougars with 13 points, while senior Nathan Baack and sophomore Jordan Mitchell added six points apiece. Arapahoe (12-2, 1-0) was paced by Wesley Foa, who went 11-for-11 from the free throw line on his way to a game-high 15 points, while Ryan Pramenko and Tyson Watson had 11 apiece.

Cherokee Trail goes on the road for its next Centennial League contest, as it will play at rival Grandview (7-7, 0-1) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
