AURORA | The Aurora Central boys basketball team accomplished two things Saturday afternoon: winning for the sixth time in seven games and assuring itself of a chance to make the postseason in its first season in Class 4A.

The Trojans — who moved down from 5A — got off to a 6-1 start for the third year in a row by virtue of an 84-56 victory over visiting Eagle Ridge Academy that gave coach Marcus Shelton’s team the number of games required to qualify the playoffs in the coronavirus pandemic.

Sophomore guard Kahfre Garrett-Mills, who came into the game averaging 22.5 points per game, bested that with a 26-point effort that included a 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line and two of the Trojans’ seven 3-pointers.

Senior Kavon Williams and junior Brian Weatherford each established their season-highs with 19 and 15 points, respectively, and six players had at least six points for Aurora Central against the Warriors (4-2).

Weatherford finished with a double-double after pulling down 10 rebounds, while senior Jalon Lewis contributed eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

The teams play again Feb. 18 at Eagle Ridge Academy.
