AURORA | Overland freshman De’Ron Davis outjumped Regis Jesuit junior Josh Perkins for the opening tip-off Tuesday night and it set the tone immediately for the non-league boys basketball shootout between the two city teams.

Sophomore guard Austin Conway poured in a team-high 19 points and topped 11 players who scored for Overland, which led from start to finish in an 80-66 triumph over the visiting Raiders in front of a packed house at Overland High School.

Davis added 11, junior Taren Williams 10 and junior Andrew Tillman nine as the Trailblazers — who swept through three games at the Ponderosa Invitational to open the season — moved to 4-0 and are already within one victory of matching last season’s total.

Perkins struck for a game-high 35 points for Regis Jesuit (4-3) — which also got six apiece from Devin Kadillak and Elijah Sanford — but dropped its first game back in Colorado after a four-game swing through Arizona.

Overland scored the first nine points of the game and threatened to run away in the first half, but Perkins and Regis Jesuit steadily chipped away and managed to get the game even in the final minute of the second quarter.

Tillman’s buzzer-beating putback gave coach Danny Fisher’s Trailblazers at 38-36 lead at halftime and they built on it significantly in the third quarter. Overland forced 10 Raiders turnovers and enjoyed a 23-9 advantage in the period, with Williams scoring six of his 10 in the quarter.

Overland gained some separation and led by 15 going into the fourth quarter, only to see a Regis Jesuit burst drop the lead to single digits.

Some tough inside baskets by sophomore King Grant-Perry and a six-point binge from freshman Reggie Gibson added some insurance.
