AURORA | The Centennial League season began with a bang Wednesday night when the Grandview and Eaglecrest boys basketball teams clashed in a game with plenty of drama.
The host Wolves emerged with a 55-51 victory over the Raptors, last season’s league winner and Class 6A state champion, in front of a packed house with help from 17 points from senior Matthew Samson.
Samson and sophomore Ismael Kabongo (15) combined to knock down seven 3-pointers as coach Ryan Turk’s Grandview team earned its third straight win and improved to 10-4.
Coach Jarris Krapcha’s Eaglecrest team had a trio of double-digit scorers in sophomore Clayton Kalimba (14 points) and juniors Reece Brown (13) and Demari Manns Davis (10).
Grandview goes on the road for its next contest, as it pays a 7 p.m. Friday visit to Cherokee Trail (11-3, 1-0), while Eaglecrest visits Smoky Hill (2-11, 0-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
In a charged up atmosphere, the Wolves came out on fire, as the scoring began with a dunk by senior Noah Sevy and later included a four-point play from Samson, who knocked down a 3-pointer through contest and made a subsequent free throw as well.
Eaglecrest stormed back, only to see Samson connect on two more 3-pointers
