AURORA | The Gateway boys basketball team started fast and kept its foot on the gas pedal until the end Tuesday night and handed visiting Aurora Central its first loss of the season.

Pushing the pace from the opening tip, the Olys — who moved to 2-0 under first-year head coach Ibn Shabazz — got out of the gates fast with the first eight point of the game, led by 14 after one quarter and 23 at halftime on their way to 77-62 victory over the Trojans, who came in 3-0.

Senior Andres Arellano opened the scoring with a 3-pointer that ignited a 30-point effort and senior Sedrick Dean Jr. joined him in double figures for Gateway (2-0), which also got at least four points from six other players.

Coach Marcus Shelton’s Aurora Central team made spurts and closed the game with a 29-point fourth quarter, but faced too big of a deficit to overcome. Sophomore Khafre Garrett-Mills has paced the Trojans in scoring in every game this season and did so again with 24 points, while Jalon Lewis had 15 and Cai’Reis Curby 11.

Gateway is scheduled to visit Prairie View Thursday, the same day Aurora Central — which dropped to 4A this season and out of the EMAC — is set to play host to another Aurora Public Schools rival, Hinkley.
