LAS VEGAS | For the second straight day, the Eaglecrest and Overland basketball teams ended up with the same result at the 2014 Tarkanian Classic.
Both Aurora teams posted first round victories in their respective brackets to open the star-studded multi-state tournament hosted by Bishop Gorman High School on Wednesday and both the Raptors and Trailblazers went down to defeat in Thursday’s second round.
Overland — a 10-point winner over Bountiful, Utah in the opening round — faced powerhouse and host Bishop Gorman on its home floor and had a difficult time from the beginning. The home team raced out to a 30-9 lead on coach Danny Fisher’s team and maintained a significant margin most of the way in a 72-59 victory.
The Trailblazers remain alive for a chance to place in the fifth-place game in the Platinum Division if they can win at 6:50 p.m. MT Friday against Prestonwood Christian (Texas). The winner of that game faces Chino Hills (California) or West Linn (Oregon) at 10 a.m. MT Saturday.
In the Premier Division, Eaglecrest got out to a strong start against Logan (Utah), but a cold shooting second half resulted in a 61-54 defeat.
Coach John Olander’s Raptors need a win over Orem (Utah) at 6:50 p.m. MT Friday at Faith Lutheran H.S. in order to advance to the fifth-place game at 6 p.m. MT Saturday against Timpview (Utah) or Durango (Nevada).
