AURORA | The Aurora Central boys basketball team is off to a 2-0 start in Colorado League play in the wake of a road win at Gateway Thursday night.
The visiting Trojans excelled in transition and gained separation from the host Olys in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead into halftime and went on to a 67-51 win in the first of two meetings of the season between the district rivals.
Junior Alex Flores came within one of matching his season-high in points with 28 to lead the way for coach Marcus Shelton’s Aurora team, which has won two straight and improved to 6-7 overall. Sophomore Deon Davis Jr. added nine points and nine rebounds, while seniors Kapano Mailo and Christ Tah had eight points apiece for the Trojans.
Flores — who is averaging 19.9 points per game this season — made three 3-pointers and came just shy of the 29-point effort he had earlier in the season against Montbello.
Coach Nicholas Dixon’s Olys cut three points off the deficit in the third quarter, but couldn’t get any closer as they dropped their league opener and now sit 2-9 on the season.
The team play again Feb. 4 at Aurora Central.
Up next for Aurora Central is a 7 p.m. home game Jan. 21 against Adams City (3-10, 1-1), while Gateway is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. game at The Village on Saturday.
