DENVER | Seven Aurora baseball players will have the chance to play one more game, as they were selected to the Colorado Rockies Futures Game.
A group of 20 seniors and 20 underclassmen were picked by local scouts and Rockies personnel for the Futures Game, which is scheduled for June 3 at Coors Field following a 1:10 p.m. contest between the Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Five of Aurora’s selections are from 2011 Class 5A state champion Regis Jesuit, which has advanced to the Final Four of this season’s 5A state baseball championship series. Coach Walt Weiss’ Raiders (19-5) had one pick on the senior team in starting pitcher Peter Bayer, who is 7-0 with a 2.88 ERA going into the final weekend of the season. The Richmond-bound right-hander will be key if Regis Jesuit is going to repeat as state champions.
Four of Bayer’s teammates were selected to the opposing underclassmen team: juniors Brody Weiss (shortstop) and Andrew Schmidt (outfield) and sophomores David Peterson (pitcher) and Max George (second base).
The left-handed Peterson is another key to the Raiders rotation, sporting a 6-2 record with two saves and a 2.90 ERA. Brody Weiss (hitting .420 with a team-best 28 RBI) and George (hitting .527 with a team-best 7 home runs and 16 stolen bases) form one of the strongest middle infield combinations around, while Schmidt (.300, 15 RBI) is a cornerstone of Regis Jesuit’s outfield.
Rounding out Aurora’s contingent for the game — both on the senior roster — is Cherokee Trail pitcher Daniel Mackay (3-1, 2.49 ERA) and Grandview shortstop Jordan Schlehuber, who hit a team-best .412 and had six victories and a 1.83 ERA for the 20-win Wolves, who were 1-2 in the 5A championship series.
