Regis Jesuit pitcher David Peterson cheers on his teammates from the bench during the fifth inning of the Raiders' 4-3 loss to Highlands Ranch in the Class 5A baseball championship series on May 18, 2012, at Bishop Machebeuf High School. Regis Jesuit went 2-1 in the opening weekend of the double-elimination tournament and remains in contention to win a second straight 5A state title. For more, see story page 35. AURORA | Regis Jesuit junior left-handed pitcher David Peterson was among the first nine players selected to participate in the 2013 Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Peterson — who went 6-3 with a 3.26 ERA last spring and helped the Raiders to the semifinals of the Class 5A state baseball championship series last spring — was selected by a committee of Baseball Factory scouts to be included in a four-day showcase featuring an American vs. National league matchup.

So far, the 6-foot-6, 205-pound Peterson is the only Colorado player confirmed for the game. Three California players, two from Florida, one each from Arizona, Texas and Canada were in the first group.

Peterson’s selection to the Under Armour Game comes two months after he verbally committed to playing at the University of Oregon. The Regis Jesuit staff had two frontliners last season, but with Peter Bayer graduating, Peterson is the clear top arm for the upcoming season under new coach Mike Anderson, who was hired when Walt Weiss became the new manager of the Colorado Rockies.

Peterson was 5-1 with a 3.43 ERA as a freshman when he helped the Raiders to the 5A state championship.

He’ll get a chance to go against some of the country’s best at the Under Armour Game, which has featured some of Aurora’s other top players in the past.

Grandview ace right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman played in the game in 2009, went on to star at Louisiana State and was selected No. 4 overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2012 MLB Draft.

Regis Jesuit’s Connor McKay — currently at the University of Kansas — and Grandview’s Greg Bird, a draft pick of the New York Yankees, played in the 2010 Under Armour game.
