Former Regis Jesuit ace Peter Bayer was the lone player with Aurora ties selected on the first two days of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Tampa Bay Rays used their ninth-round selection (No. 270 overall) on Friday to take Bayer, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound right-hander out of Cal Poly Pomona.

Bayer originally went to Richmond University after he graduated from Regis Jesuit in 2012, but transferred to Cal Poly Pomona, where he notched a 2-2 record with a 4.39 ERA as a senior in the 2016 season. He finished atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 103 strikeouts in his senior season and struck out 14 in his final start against Central Missouri.

As a senior at Regis Jesuit in 2012, Bayer finished with an 8-0 mark and 2.51 ERA in 55 2/3 innings on his way to making the Aurora Sentinel’s All-City Baseball Team, along with the Raiders’ other top-line starter, David Peterson, who is now at the University of Oregon.

A lynchpin for then Regis Jesuit manager Walt Weiss (now the Colorado Rockies’ manager), Bayer also pitched in the Rockies Futures Game at Coors Field.

In 2011, Bayer started and pitched 3 1/3 innings against Cherry Creek in the Class 5A state championship game won by the Raiders 15-10.

The MLB draft concludes Saturday with rounds 11-40.
