AURORA | Jacob Olson knew well the pitcher he dug into the batter’s box to face Friday afternoon and he had a strong idea what pitch he would see first.
The Regis Jesuit junior got the curveball he anticipated from Chaparral starter Beckett Bacon in the second inning of a Continental League matinee and crushed it over the fence in right center field for a two-run home run that held up in the Raiders’ 2-1 victory.
Olson’s blast was all coach Matt Darr’s team was able to put on the scoreboard against the talented Beckett, but it was all Regis Jesuit — winners of five straight and 11-5 on the season — would need thanks to the efforts of junior right-hander Hudson Alpert.
Alpert scattered four hits, allowed a single run and worked out of trouble on several occasions to preserve the victory with a complete game effort. He improved to 3-2 overall and lowered his ERA to 1.25 in the process
Olson had homered in his previous two games this week against Douglas County and Fruita Monument and he did it again in the second inning as he followed up a single by senior Gavin Cronin. As he watched the ball clear the fence, Olson flipped his bat in front of the Raiders’ dugout and held up a hand in celebration as he rounded second base.
Alpert cruised through the first four innings before he ran into some trouble in the later innings. The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly.
