DENVER | With two win over quality teams on the opening day of the Class 5A baseball championship series, Grandview earned a spot in the final four for the first time in school history.

The fourth-seeded Wolves took care of No. 5 Cherry Creek — their Centennial League rival — 7-4 in their opener Friday afternoon at All-City Field, and followed it up with a 9-2 rout of top-seeded Rocky Mountain.

The two victories assured coach Dean Adams’ team of advancing to the second weekend of the double-elimination championship series, when the eight-team field is pared down to four.

Grandview can put itself in pole position in the tournament with a victory Saturday against the other 2-0 team from the first day, sixth-seeded ThunderRidge. The Wolves and Grizzlies are slated to play at 3 p.m. at All-City Field.

Reece Weber had a big day for Grandview on Friday, as he pitched 6 1/3 innings in the victory over  Cherry Creek and hit a two-run home run in the first inning  against Rocky Mountain and scored three times.

Weber and Rory Stewart hit back-to-back home runs for only the second time all season and Josh Huntley added a three-run shot off the glove of Rocky Mountain centerfielder Spencer Ibarra.
