DENVER | Four teams remain in the chase for the Class 5A state baseball championship and Grandview is glad to be one of them.

The Wolves survived the first weekend of the double-elimination 5A baseball championship series for the first time in school history, winning two of their first three games May 17-18 to advance.

Fourth-seeded Grandview (19-4) squares off with No. 1 Rocky Mountain (20-3) — a team it defeated 9-2 last weekend — in an elimination game at noon Friday at All-City Field.

The winner survives again until Saturday, where it will play the victor of Friday’s 2:30 p.m. contest between sixth-seeded ThunderRidge — the tournament’s only 3-0 team — and No. 5 Cherry Creek at noon Saturday.

Senior first baseman Rory Stewart led Grandview’s offensive attack on the opening weekend, as he homered twice and drove in six runs in three games, while senior center fielder Reece Weber had four extra-base hits and scored five runs in that span.

Weber and senior Spencer Johnson earned wins on the mound in the opening two games, with junior Tanner Thomas closing out both wins.

No. 2 Chaparral, No. 3 Legend, No. 7 Mountain Vista and No. 8 Chatfield were eliminated from the tournament on the first weekend.
