AURORA | The Gateway baseball team earned its second of the season over rival Aurora Central Thursday with a wind-blown 10-4 road victory.
In gusty conditions on the Trojans’ home field, junior Heber Almeida threw a complete game — escaping trouble in a few key occasions — and also homered to help the Olys to their fourth consecutive victory.
Almeida worked around seven hits allowed with seven strikeouts and joined sophomore teammate Yaandy Aguayo with three runs driven in for coach Rashad Mason’s Gateway team, which upped its record to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Colorado League play. Senior Mervin Loya picked up two RBI, while senior Maikol Ochoa scored three time for the Olys, who also defeated Aurora Central 6-5 back on April 1.
Coach Donald Gomez’s Aurora Central team — which earned a walk-off win over Skyview two days earlier — trailed 4-0 before it came up to hit for the first time and found picks of success against Almeida. Junior Kalai Bentosino picked up three hits, while Eloy Sifuentes drove in a run for the Trojans (4-8, 2-4).
Weather permitting, Gateway was scheduled to play host to Englewood (5-7) at 10 a.m. Saturday, while has a 4 p.m. April 22 visit to Thornton (0-16).
