Sentinel Colorado’s preps Blast from the Past image for Aug. 7, 2023, is an up close look at a gritty finish by Smoky Hill teammates Kyle Ames and Marty Andrie at the Class 5A boys state cross country race on Oct. 30, 2010, at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds. Smoky Hill earned the chance to play host to the state race for two years at the venue — which had been run at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins the previous season — and the Buffaloes secured an Aurora-best seventh place in a field of 24 teams in the boys race. Ames bested Andrie in a sprint to the finish for a time of 16 minutes, 48.78 seconds, with Andrie crossing in 16:49.33 as they came in 17th and 18th, respectively. It was a big rise for both runners from the previous season, especially for Andrie, who moved all the way up from 50th in 2009 and would go on to compete at the Colorado School of Mines, while Ames (who ended up at George Washington University) had been 29th in that race.
