Former Grandview basketball star Michaela Onyenwere and USA Basketball came away from the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, with a silver medal.

The Americans suffered a 79-73 loss to Brazil Aug. 10 in the gold medal game at Coliseo Eduardo Dibos and ended the tournament 4-1 overall after pool play wins over Columbia, Argentina and the U.S. Virgin Islands and a semifinal victory over Puerto Rico.

Onyenwere — who is about to start her junior year at UCLA — played a large part in the USA’s success. She started all five games and led the team in rebounding (7.8 per contest), while she finished as the team’s third-leading scorer with an average of 10 points per game.

Onyenwere won her first career medal in international competition.

Two other current or former Aurora basketball stars had won previous international medals with USA Basketball over the summer in Regis Jesuit grad Fran Belibi and Grandview sophomore Lauren Betts.
