A host of Aurora’s just-graduated senior athletes get one more chance to compete at the prep level before moving on.
Athletes is six sports earned selection to take part in the 58th annual Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State Games, slated for June 9-14 on the campus of Adams State University in Alamosa.
Seventeen seniors from seven Aurora high schools were chosen to compete in football, boys basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country and spirit over a six-day span, which includes several athletes staying in school dormitories and practicing daily on a college-type atmosphere.
Football is the biggest event of the All-State Games and six Aurora players help fill the rosters of the North and South teams, which kickoff at 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Rex Stadium.
Centennial League foes from Cherokee Trail (Temple signee Jacob Martin and Colorado-bound Evan White), Overland (Colorado State recruit Tre Thomas and Fort Hays State signee A.J. Roper) and Grandview (CSU-Pueblo recruit Gabe Cirivello) all team up on the South Team, while Colorado Mesa University-bound Chance Drake of Hinkley suits up for the North.
Five Aurora softball players were selected to take part in a 2 p.m. June 11 contest, including the Cherokee Trail trio of Christian Bobian (Western Neb. C.C.), Zoe Hinton (MIT) and Emily Sparks (Kansas Wesleyan), along with Regis Jesuit’s Lauren Caldwell (Fort Lewis) and Eaglecrest’s Rayle Glover (UC-Colorado Springs). No Aurora softball players competed in the 2013 All-State softball contest.
Boys basketball is set for June 14 and has a local flavor, especially on the White Team, which is set to be coached by Gary Childress — a longtime active member of the CHSCA — and his son, Spencer. In March, Gary Childress stepped down from his post as Grandview’s boys basketball coach after 16 seasons, but gets a last chance to coach one of his players in KyRon Allen on the White Team, in addition to Eaglecrest’s Jaisean Jackson (S.D. College of Mines). Romello Washington of Vista PEAK, who still hasn’t committed yet, plays on the Black Team.
Cross country joins the CHSCA All-State Games this season and debuts at 9 a.m. June 11. Grandview’s Erin Norton — an Iowa State signee who missed nearly her entire senior track season with a stress fracture — was selected to race, but has not been cleared medically to compete yet, while Regis Jesuit’s Claire Strohm (Occidental (Calif.) College) is the lone Aurora athlete in the June 14 volleyball competition.
Grandview’s Sabrina Peyton is set to take part on the spirit/cheer team, which will cheer at the football game and during the basketball finals on June 14.
