AURORA | The remainder of all fall prep sports teams hit the practice field on Monday, as the Colorado High School Activities Association gives the nod to begin the 2012-13 athletic year.
Football, boys soccer, volleyball, softball, cross country, boys tennis, field hockey and gymnastics get their time to start shaping rosters and preparing for the upcoming regular season, following the lead of boys golf last week.
Boys tennis and softball don’t have to wait long, as they can open scrimmage or play regular season contests on Thursday and Friday, respectively. The Cherokee Trail and Regis Jesuit softball teams both have scrimmages scheduled for Saturday.
A few Zero Week football games are scheduled for Aug. 24, but the regular season for all sports opens Aug. 30.
Eleven Aurora high schools are set to compete in varsity athletic this year as Vista PEAK arrives on the scene and will play in the new Colorado 7 conference.
Aurora’s other schools remain in their established leagues for most sports: Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley and Rangeview in the East Metro Athletic Conference; Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest, Grandview, Overland and Smoky Hill in the Continental League and Regis Jesuit in the Continental League.
Two city teams won Class 5A state championships last fall, the Regis Jesuit boys golf team — its second straight — and Overland gymnastics squad. The Raiders got off to a fast start on Aug. 9, winning the opening Continental League tournament by 26 strokes.
