Regis Jesuit’s dominating run to the Class 5A state championship is reflected in the makeup of the 2012 Aurora Sentinel All-City Boys Swim Team.

Individual state champions Ben Fry (50 yard freestyle), Clark Smith (100 butterfly) and Kyle Goodwin (diving) and the 400 relay team of Fry, Smith, Hennessey Stuart and Erik Biernat highlight the team All-City Team, which is based on performance at the Class 5A boys state swim meet.

Coach Mike Doherty’s Raiders put on a show of power at the Edora Pool & Ice Center, finishing 141 points clear of runner-up Cherry Creek to claim their 17th 5A state championship in 18 seasons.

Fry (co-winner of the Hoyt Brawner Award as Colorado’s top senior swimmer) and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier Smith had big meets, each winning individual titles while also swimming on the championship-winning 200 and 400 free relay teams. For Fry, who is headed to the U.S. Naval Academy, it was a second straight title in the 50 free, which he won with an All-America Consideration time of 21.07 seconds. Fry was also second in the 100 freestyle, but well behind Cherry Creek’s Darryl Turner, who set a state record.

While training to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb., Smith continued to contribute to the team and collected a third straight 5A title in the 100 butterfly. After coming in second in prelims with a time of 50.56 seconds, Smith turned it up big time in the final, touching the wall in an Automatic All-America time of 48.73 seconds. He also anchored the 200 freestyle relay championship team and was the fastest leg of the 400 freestyle relay squad which capped the meet with a new state record.

Goodwin had an outstanding debut high school season and after going back and forth with several rivals, finished on top of the diving competition with 533.25 points. He became the first diver from an Aurora school to win the state title since Smoky Hill’s Doogie Cohen in 2008 and Regis Jesuit’s first since Sean Moore in 2007.

Sophomore Matt Mauser benefited greatly from Goodwin’s presence, as he improved greatly and finished second overall in a show of power by coach Taylor Roberts’ diving group.

Individually, budding sophomore distance star Chris Dawson topped Aurora swimmers in the 200 (9th) and 500 (5th) freestyles and steady junior Tim Smith led in the 200 individual medley, while Stuart — a two-event placer and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier himself — Biernat, Andrew Hanna, Zach Suter and Grayson Magruder helped the Raiders to two relay state titles and a runner-up finish in the 200 medley.

Biernat swam the anchor leg on the 400 freestyle relay and held off the charge of Cherry Creek’s Turner to seal the state title and the new Colorado record of 3:04.91, while Suter and Magruder each teamed with Fry and Smith on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Suter was also on the Raiders’ 200 freestyle title-winning team in 2011.

The only event a Regis Jesuit swimmer didn’t top Aurora entries was the 100 breaststroke, where Smoky Hill senior Steven Holiday finished 3rd. Holiday — a Colorado Mesa University signee who was also 12th in the 50 free — was second after prelims, but dropped a place in finals.
