Boys Golf: Cherokee Trail, Grandview tie for 4th in tight Centennial League meet

AURORA | The closest Centennial League boys golf tournament of the year saw just three strokes separate second and fourth places.

At the top, Arapahoe ran away with a 16-stroke victory in the league’s third meet of the season Thursday at Murphy Creek Golf Course, but a tight bunch followed. Mullen snared second place with a team score of 314, followed closely by Cherry Creek (316) and the top two Aurora teams — Cherokee Trail and Grandview — which each shot 317.

Cherokee Trail’s Ben Knapp improved six strokes from the first to the second Centennial League tournament and dropped three more strokes in the third, shooting a season-best 74 that was second only to Arapahoe’s Henry Schaefer’s 68.

Grandview’s Randy Urso came in with a 75 that put him in a three-way tie for fifth place, while teammate Devyn Solano solidified his fifth place standing in the league’s individual standings with a 76. The Wolves got an 80 from Kyle Carr, a score matched by the Cougars’ Alex Anderson and Ben John.

Smoky Hill came in sixth with senior Joey Cleveland’s 76 leading the way.

Next best among Aurora players was Overland junior Joe Slocum, who checked in with a 77, which was five strokes better than his two previous league tournaments.

The fourth Centennial League tournament is scheduled for Sept. 6 at Fitzsimons G.C.
