Baseball: Regis Jesuit in two-horse race for Continental League after edging Mountain Vista

AURORA | After an 11-game winning streak came to an end, the Regis Jesuit baseball team started another one that could lead to the Continental League championship.

Bouncing back from a walk-off loss at Ponderosa on April 25 — their first loss since falling on March 27 during a spring break trip to Phoenix — the Raiders got a walk-off win of their own on Friday against visiting Mountain Vista, as Joey Larson drove in the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 victory.

The win pushed Regis Jesuit to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in Continental League play, tying it with Legend for the top spot in the standings with just two games left in the league season. Both teams have a two-game cushion on the rest of the league with coach Walt Weiss’ Raiders holding the tiebreaker thanks to an 11-3 win over the Titans on April 11.

Max George rallied Regis Jesuit from a 3-2 deficit with a fifth-inning solo home run, part of his 3-for-3 day that included two runs scored. Eric Brunts drove in a run for Regis Jesuit, as did Larson, who singled off reliever Austin Bryan to plate the winning run.

Three Raiders pitchers scattered four Mountain Vista hits and sophomore left-hander David Peterson picked up the win by pitching a scoreless top of the seventh inning. Starter Reagan Todd went four innings and Daniel Sutherland notched two scoreless innings of relief, including working out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning.

Regis Jesuit has a home game against Littleton (2-13, 0-9) on April 30 before finishing up at Chaparral (10-6, 6-3) on May 2.
