Season highlights: The Vista PEAK girls basketball team knew its window to make a significant move in the postseason was open in the 2018-19 season, with Hughes entering her senior season after an outstanding junior campaign. She came in more determined to lead coach Howard Payne’s Bison with more than statistics and she did just that, though her production never slipped. Hughes scored at least 13 points in every single game and averaged 23.5 points per contest for a team that won 21 games and fell in the second round of the playoffs in its first season in Class 5A. Hughes tallied 30 or more points four times, including 31 in her team’s two-point playoff loss to Chaparral, while she had nine double-doubles and averaged a team-high 8.9 rebounds per game in addition to 2.6 steals. Hughes, who shared EMAC Player of the Year honors with Brighton’s Kaylah Lewis, earned a return trip to the A-Town All-Star Game.
