Season highlights: Smith was part of the backcourt that provided the “engine” for coach Danny Fisher’s Overland team, which bounced back from a 1-7 start and went on to win the Centennial League championship and reach the Great 8 round of the Class 5A state playoffs. In his third season, Smith upped his scoring average to a career-high 13.2 points per game, including a season-high 25-point game against Class 5A runner-up George Washington in a game in which he threw down a memorable one-handed dunk. The All-Centennial League first team selection was also the team’s leading 3-point shooter with 43 makes, including one at the buzzer to give the Trailblazers a win over state champion Grandview during the regular season. Smith led his team in steals (1.3 per game), finished second on his team in assists (2.9 per game) and was fourth in rebounding (3.2).
