Local prep track athletes who want a last taste of competition can take part of the state pentathlon, which is scheduled for Wednesday at Brighton High School.
The event isn’t sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association, but has annually attracted versatile athletes from large and small schools across the state. Aurora schools have hosted the state pentathlon on many occasions in the past, the last in 2010 at Legacy Stadium, but Brighton is putting it on this season.
As of Tuesday, athletes from 22 different high schools were registered for the event, with each able to enter a maximum of four athletes. The pentathlon is scored in six events: boys run a 1,500 meter race and throw the discus in addition to runs of 200 and 800 meters, high jump and long jump, while the girls run an 800 meter race and throw the shot put instead of the discus to go with the other events.
The pentathlon is a great chance for athletes to compete in events outside of their usual emphasis and often provides comic relief when distance runners compete in the throwing events and throwers run distance races.
Tentative pentathlon time schedule: 1:45 p.m. – Coaches Meeting; 2 p.m. – Girls 200m AB; 2:15 p.m. – Boys 200m AB, Girls High Jump A, Girls Shot Put (2 attempts) B; 2:30 p.m. – Boys Long Jump A, Boys Discus B; 3 p.m. – Girls Long Jump A, Girls High Jump B; 3:15 p.m. – Boys Long Jump B, Boys Discus A; 3:45 p.m. – Girls Shot Put A, Girls Long Jump B; 4 p.m. – Boys High Jump A; 4:30 p.m. – Girls 800m AB; 4:45 p.m. – Boys High Jump B, Boys 1500m Run A; 5:30 p.m. – Boys 1500m Run B; 5:45 p.m. – Awards
