AURORA | One man died by suicide shortly after shooting a woman, seriously wounding her, in a suspected incident of domestic violence in Aurora Monday afternoon.
Aurora police said on Twitter that a man shot a woman at about 4:45 p.m. Aug. 24 in the 2300 block of North Emporia Street. He then shot himself and died from his injuries a short time later.
The Adams County Coroner’s Office will be tasked with formally identifying the man who died in the coming days.
The woman who was shot survived, but she remains in “serious condition” at a local hospital, according to police tweets.
Authorities are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses who may have seen the shooting occur, according to a tweet published shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Aggravated assaults, which is often how non-fatal shootings are defined in statistics, were up 22% in the city in the first seven months of the year when compared to the same time period in 2020, data show.
Aggravated assaults related to instances of domestic violence in Aurora are up about 11% year over year.
A total of 289 people had been injured in domestic-violence related aggravated assaults in the city between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1.
