BOULDER |  Remains discovered by hikers last week have been identified as those of a Boulder man who was reported missing in 2011.

The Daily Camera reported Sunday that the Boulder County Coroner’s Office had determined the remains belong to Ernest Macaulay.

Macaulay, then 72, was last seen on Sept. 28, 2011. His vehicle was found at a trailhead in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area.

The county Sheriff’s Office says hikers found a skull near Lefthand Reservoir on Sept. 3. Authorities later found additional remains.

The coroner is working to determine the cause of death.
