AURORA | Former Aurora City Councilmember Marsha Berzins announced she is running for Arapahoe County treasurer in 2022.
Berzins, a Republican, served on the city council from 2009 through 2021, representing Ward III in central Aurora, which includes Del Mar Park, Towncenter Mall of Aurora and the Aurora Municipal Center. She was term-limited in 2021.
She also ran for mayor in 2019.
“As a taxpayer and a citizen of our great county, you deserve a County Treasurer who is a proven leader with a voice who speaks for all citizens, regardless of their country of origin, language or religion,” her campaign website reads in part.
If elected, Berzins would replace Sue Sandstrom, who is term-limited, completing her third term as treasurer this year. Sandstrom also sat on the Aurora City Council before running for county treasurer.
The county administrator position is responsible for collecting and distributing property tax dollars and other county funds. On Berzins’ website, she presents herself as a small business owner with deep roots in Aurora and Arapahoe County, having moved to the area in 1979.
Her website features endorsements from Colorado state Rep. Rod Bockenfeld, council members Francoise Bergan and Danielle Jurinsky, and former Councilmember Dave Gruber.
Berzins filed an affidavit Nov. 30 with the Colorado Secretary of State formalizing her candidacy and announced her run via Facebook on Friday.
As of Monday, just one other person, Democrat Michael Westerberg, a tax attorney, had registered to run for the treasurer seat in 2022.
Berzins reached her term limit on the council in 2021 and was replaced by Democrat Ruben Medina.

Let’s see, we all hollar about term limits right? So, Berzins, a Republican, served on the city council from 2009 through 2021, representing Ward III in central Aurora, which includes Del Mar Park, Towncenter Mall of Aurora and the Aurora Municipal Center. She was term-limited in 2021.
But, now, this term limited politician is running for another government position…I’m thinking … no…..I’ll go for the Tax Attorney on this one myself
