COLORADO SPRINGS |  Officials in central Colorado say a Colorado Springs police officer was shot and critically wounded early Thursday.

Police Chief Pete Carey says Officer Cem (jem) Duzel was in surgery. The suspect sustained non-life threatening injuries. His name has not been released.

The shooting happened when officers responded to a report of shots fired east of downtown Colorado Springs at about 2:45 a.m.

Streets in the area are closed while the shooting is investigated.
