Colorado voters have tough choices to make on this year’s ballot, but the decision for U.S. Senate is clear and easy: Mark Udall.

Aurora Sentinel Badge

Even if Republican challenger Cory Gardner were a credible candidate to represent one of the country’s most diverse and dynamic states in the U.S. Senate, Udall has proven himself in the House and Senate that he has all Colorado interests at heart.

Make no mistake, Congressman Gardner is not a credible candidate for the Senate seat. His campaign has been decimated by deceits and distractions. It’s political bait-and-switch at its worse, and Colorado voters can easily see through it.

After being sent to Congress two years ago by northeast Colorado voters to represent the 4th Congressional District, Gardner quickly established himself as a faithful Tea Party soldier, willing to toe the line on shutting down the U.S. government during political bickering; a strong proponent of extreme, unworkable and unpopular moves to force illegal immigrants and their families out of the country; measures that would return the country to the very Bush-era economic policies that helped push the economy to the brink of disaster; backing policies that treat homosexual Americans as inferior; and policies that would destroy medical privacy and benefits when it comes to women’s reproductive rights.

Gardner is not alone in standing behind those political philosophies, even though they’re held by a small but vocal minority in this country, and especially in Colorado. But rather than explain and defend his beliefs, Gardner has sought to hide and manipulate his political past and future agenda. His campaign is built on misleading attacks against Udall and misleading explanations of his own politics.

Udall has been a consistent force for intelligent, fair and realistic ways to protect and enhance Colorado’s economy, environment and lifestyle. This is a progressive state that relishes independence and individual freedoms. Udall’s voting record as a Democrat in the U.S. House and Senate illustrates a consistent voice that speaks for all of Colorado, not just an extreme minority. He has been essential to upholding Colorado’s tradition of setting aside and protecting vast tracts of public lands for a wide range of public use, industry and enjoyment. He, and all of Colorado, has been at the forefront of creating new-energy industries and jobs, which almost all economists agree is critical to protecting the national and regional economies, and protecting the future of the planet.

We haven’t agreed with Udall on every vote and every position, but we know he can be trusted to make decisions based on thoughtful analysis of impacts on everyone in Colorado. Udall has the integrity to stand behind his votes and his politics, a quality Gardner clearly lacks. We recommend trusting Udall with another term in the Senate.

  1. The Sentinel has stated its case clearly and concisely. Mark Udall is a thoughtful United States Senator. Cory Gardner would become another of the shrill Tea Party advocates who blindly do what their handlers tell them. I have been particularly impressed by Senator Udall’s willingness to stand up for the rights of all Americans privacy in the face of the National Security Agency (NSA). We need principled leadership — and he has provided it to Colorado and the entire nation.

    1. Oh Really? He was a thoughtful and accessible Representative, but as a Senator, he has voted 99% with Obama and Biden. Now I don’t consider them as thoughtful, and they for sure do not respect military, or do anything for me as a Senior aged Old guy connected with Aurora since it only had 3,000 residents when wife and I bought our home. Altura was to east of us, and I paid $17.65 a quarter for all the water I wanted to use (un-metered) and trash picked up one day a week. I had a railroad track in my backyard, where Potomac is now, running from Smith Road to Fitzsimons and then to Lowry AFB on what is now 6th Avenue. And that was one lane each direction then. I don’t want a Senator who votes 99% of the time with President and Vice President. Reason we are in doldrums outside the beltway of Washington, and the downtown (city and county) of Denver. I am not worried of what Cory will do, I know what Mark Udall has done as Senator. And I considered him friend as Representative, when he actually represented me and my peers. But that is not true now. (Besides that, he introduces more land to be under Government Control, keeping public off of public land). I want that land paying taxes into State Funds so our taxes don’t have to be so high in my retirement years. All the land in Colorado should be controlled by Colorado, to benefit of our citizens. Not taken to Washington, so we have to beg for funding.

      1. Colorado is a state where Obama easily won twice. Is Udall supposed to vote with the obstructionist republicans in senate? Cory Gardner has voted with his fellow obstructionists who shut the government down in the house well over 90% of the time. I bet you have no problem with that,

        1. When he campaigned, he asked for our votes, BECAUSE HE WAS GOING TO REPRESENT WE, THE CONSTUENTS. As a Senator, he is representing Obama and Eastern-Western Coastal politics. No way do the average Colorado citizens in Rural area want their guns grabbed, all the drugs routed through Colorado with People smuggling, and Money-Gun Trading. Or am I missing something out here in the hinderlands? And just where are you coming from, and what has he done that puts tingles up and down your legs. Hickenlooper, Udall, Bennet, are not my rice cup providers, and never have been.

          1. He’s representing the people who put him into office, Colorado democrats. Is Cory gardner representing CO voters when he supports personhood? The overwhelmingly majority of Colorado voters oppose personhood.

          2. So does Cory. Udall is the 60 plus old guy talking so strongly about birth control and abortions. Sheriff would have come for him long time ago, if he did that around school yard, wearing long coat. Why is he and Democrats so anxious to keep women working? Not have the children they want, or be able to stay home as so many are. Just saw report that Democratic policies have taken more jobs away from women, and WH does not pay their women at the higher rate of male employees. Abortion, birth control seems to be only issue that Democrats feel safe in talking about. Don’t have much on other issues, and they block investigations into those. By the way, posting on net seems to be your only occupation. I am retired, are you? Or who pays you for posting?

      2. Frank2525, I don’t know how your tenure as an Aurora resident has any bearing on the issue (but I too have lived in the city for over 50 years). But back to your final point, need I remind you, all of the land in Colorado was federal land before we became a state in 1876. Like every state, outside of the original 13, Colorado was granted land when it reached statehood. Now, do you think that your taxes would be lower if all of the tourists stayed home, because our state and national parks, forests, and monuments were privately owned and chopped into little homeowner lots like yours? I think not! Colorado has some pristine areas, and I am glad to have Senator Udall helping to preserve them.

        1. You are picking a time in our history, and ignoring all before. King of England presented a grant to Lord Baltimore 100 miles wide, and from coast to coast, though no one had ever traveled or mapped that. But it established the first colonies. Also another grant of 100 miles wide, coast to coast that encompassed first colonies in Philadelphia areas for colonies. Remember we fought a war with England to free the colonies. So if you think history and long time on the land needs to be considered, then by all means we need that conversation. I have traveled in 44 of our 50 states, and even lived in many of those in my 26 years in military. East of the Mississippi they have those national parks, memorials, and reserved areas, but federals paid the states for the land they used, for buildings, museums, memorials, etc. If the 10th Amendment works for states east off Mississippi, then why where the western territories not handled in same manner. Why do you accept western states only controlling 20 or 30% of the state lands, while BLM, Federals designating public lands, then keeping us off them permissible. And I pointed out that Trees of Mystery on Highway 1 and 101 in California are privately owned, paying taxes to California and those redwood trees are well preserved. Oregon and Washington have managed forests, where they cut trees, plant new ones, and those forests are well managed. Much gnashing of teeth by the environmentalists who don’t own an acre of that land, but they produce lumber, sell to the world by ocean shipping, and are well managed. And I believe Royal Gorge is privately owned. Those tourists, and even Colorado citizens would still have their forests, mountains, and state could do a better job of managing our mountains. When the flood wiped out roads to Estes Park in 2013, Democrats closed Rocky Mountain Park and Trail Ridge during shutdown that was not necessary. And don’t give me trash talk that Republicans did that. Director of National Parks ordered the signs, had them manufactured, delivered right after election of 2012. Shutdown was 1/6 of government, and only public portions, but ordered by Pres. Obama, thru guidance of Eric Holder. Even to signs in France closing the cemetery, same as WWII Memorial. You did not see any Democrat senators or representatives there helping the veterans remove the gates, they took to White House and threw on the lawn. But you did see Republicans. I believe my 51 years of owning Aurora House, comes close to out-ranking your years, but wife born in Denver 1935 definitely out ranks that. So don’t give me that about chopping up into developer small lots. That is happening now with Federals. State would be a bit closer to problem, and control that. We pay premium surcharge on utility bills down here, so those folks building up in the Mountains can have phone service. They should not be up there, but pull strings you and I cannot.

        2. One more quick comment: State of Colorado reopened Rocky Mountain Park and Trail Ridge, so heavy equipment could come over the mountain to re-open the roads and let Estes Park, and other areas in the mountains could be connected to the world again. So, we the tax-payers picked up that funding in state. And Military should not have been shut down, since House had passed bill to fund all government functions, except ACA (Obama Care) the monstrosity hatched in dark room of Senate, passed by Democrats, and is albatross around all our necks. Even Democrats are beginning to realize what they have done. You don’t see any of them bragging about it, or making main part of their campaign.

    2. You can go back to Udall’s campaign office and collect your check. Udall represents Washington Democrats, not Colorado.

      1. Colorado democrats support Udall. You can see that in many of the polls where Udall has support from the overwhelmingly majority of democrats. Cory “conman” Gardner supports personhood when the overwhelmingly majority of Colorado voters don’t. He represents the extremist obstructionists in congress, not Colorado voters.

        1. Anyone who looks into “Personhood” and realizes the low paid tyrants will administer it, realizes what the future will be for families who want to be private in family and health issues. Of course ACA is planned to do that anyway, as Democrats project power over all.

      2. While there is no check awaiting me — I am glad to have struck a chord! Rants like your’s only come from those with no substantive argument on their side.

  2. Did the DNC write this? Wow. Talk about deceitful and lacking of facts. Here we go again blaming Bush for the Economy when Clinton is the one the wrote it into law.

    1. I think you’re very confused. Trying to pin financial deregulation of Wall Street, a bedrock Republican plank, on Democrats doesn’t pass the smell test. Look, you can’t fool the generation that lived through the Great GOP Bush Recession, but maybe if you join forces with the Jeffco school board, you can rewrite history books with your false propaganda and fool gullible youngsters of the future.

  3. ANOTHER newspaper endorses Mark Udall. Just more and more evidence that Cory Gardner is too extreme for Colorado. Cory supports personhood showing hw out of touch he is with Colorado voters who overwhelmingly REJECTED personhood twice, and soon to be a 3rd time at the ballot box next month.

    1. Nothing new about Newspapers endorsing Democrats. So does MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC but they have been in the tank last years. Would have vetted our president if they had been non-partisan and had the reporters we used to have. Ones we have now get tingles up their legs. Reason so many papers have failed, or are now going digital to feed the texting -tweeting non-informed voters.

  4. Not too biased are you? Why not just declare that your paper is the Colorado arm of the Obama Ministry of Propaganda?

      1. Think I will agree with Mike272. Tonight I watched as Obama stated that his policies were definitely part of the Democrat Campaign, when he was asked why Democrats were avoiding being seen with him. Immediately following that was a video clip of past President Bill Clinton, stating to ignore present president. I know Bill has lied about sex and definitions of words, but I will take his opinion this election, just as I had same thoughts in 2008 after reading two books Obama was supposed to have written. I purchased those in 2006, and also researched archived files of the two, major Chicago papers. Not very much positive of his job performance as state legislator, federal senator, and most obvious was that when he moved to a position, he immediately started campaigning for next, higher level. Voting present, not leaving any written papers behind, not conducive to performing in next level, which he has not. Now for Udall to vote 99% of time with those policies, does not speak well for representing Colorado. You can hash that anyway you want, but you still have never stated a positive result, that made life better here in Colorado. And those hard facts are now coming into view.

        1. Sorry that Udall didn support Obama 100% of the time. the opponent has come out of the closet on women rights but he has other been lying to the Tea Party (Republician Party) or he is lying to the voter for political gain. Udall is my guy.

  5. Bravo Dave – I agree that Cory Gardner would be a disaster. Would he again
vote to close the government down?

  6. Colorado voters can easily see through the fake “war on women” scare tactics of Mark Udall. A do-nothing Senator who lets Harry Reid tell him how to vote. Why would anyone bet their whole campaign on a social issue that is considered “settled”. I’m independent, but if I sat in congress judging some of Obama’s ideas, I could be considered an obstructionist too. Obstruction isn’t bad — it’s how bad legislation gets blocked. Without a defense there is no football game.
