DEAR EDITOR: Senate Bill 19-077 is seductive in that it pretends to be a “green” bill, exploiting all the good intent of using less energy and saving our planet.
What the bill doesn’t say is that under current law, the utilities can already build charging stations and pay for these stations themselves. What this bill promotes is for the utilities to build charging stations and have the ratepayer (that means you and me) pay for them.
The utilities would get the return on our investment. What would we get? We would get another expense line item on our Xcel and Black Hills Energy monthly bills. This bill is great for Xcel, Black Hills Energy and the one percent who drive electric or hybrid cars. It is disastrous to the pocket books of the 99 percent who can’t afford either electric or hybrid cars.
