QUID HAS HEARD that anything goes when the going gets rough in Aurora. Seems that in the midst of the city getting its 15 minutes on the world stage after the heinous July 20 movie massacre, just about any media claim would fly unchallenged. Here are a few whoppers Quid came across:
• A Denver Post article about how Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates handled himself during the crisis painted him as a normally stoic character that broke down on national TV in a “rare” display of emotion. Rare? Oates? Quid refers the Post hack to TV stand ups for the Aarone Thompson case, the tragic loss of an Aurora police officer, and handful of other TV appearances.
• More than a couple of national TV reports explaining that suspect James Holmes lived in an apartment in an Aurora neighborhood that was a peaceful college campus setting. Say what? He lived on a gritty street in northwest Aurora some distance from the school.
• Numerous reports that Aurora is one of the “safest” communities in the country, a place where shocking crimes just don’t happen. Ummmm, no. While mass murders are pretty rare here, Aurora has had more than its fair share of shock and horror.
• Cable network TV reporters referring to Aurora as a “mountain town.” Maybe for Florida and Texas types, the rolling hills of Expo Park seem mountainous, but, no, Aurora is a city on the plains.
• Multiple reports of Aurora being “in the shadow of Denver.” Denver is in a hole about 300 feet below Aurora and the rest of the metro area. There are no Denver shadows.
AND QUID HAS HEARD the score is finally settled as to who really “owns” Olympic Gold Medalist and cool-teen Missy Franklin. Seems that Franklin herself has repeated what other international media have disagreed upon. Is the teen swimming phenom “Colorado’s,” “Denver’s,” or “Centennial’s?” Franklin answered that question this week when she lamented the recent shooting tragedy in her “hometown” of Aurora, which is where she goes to school. Aurora’s Franklin, as much a diplomat as a star athlete, said she was happy to bring home the gold to the city where the sun rises first.
AND QUID HAS HEARD that not even California has the lure of Aurora. So much so that former “celebrity” couple Larry Beer and Karen Middleton are headed back to Aurora after a political hiatus took the couple west. Word is the former city councilman and state legislator will be home for Christmas. No word yet on whether they’ll be wanting their old political jobs back.
AND THAT’S ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS
