LETTER: Susan Brown Tea Party accusations just bizarre

Tea party columnist Susan Stamper Brown’s missive blaming the

president and democrats for pervasive income disparity and growing

poverty, not only in the USA but globally, is bizarre! Brown misuses

census and Pew research data to bake her case and hitches it to the

Hunger Games fantasy in an ironic twist of the one-percenter bad guys

portrayed in that movie series. Inaccuracies and twisted truths

abound in her column, but let’s address just a few. We are recovering

from the worst economic disaster since the great depression, one

brought on largely by the previous republican administration. Income

disparity and poverty rates have been growing since the Reagan

administration and the policy and rule changes begun there, commonly

known as “trickle down” economics (which Brown cynically twists to

“trickle down” poverty enacted by dems). Outsourcing jobs to other

countries, off shore accounts, union busting, demonizing “liberal”

media, and deregulation are some hallmarks of this shift. Yet despite

an obstructionist republican congress, the nation is, in fact,

recovering. Data shows that with housing, unemployment, income, and

other measures. To expect that this would all be undone and trends to

shift in five years during this recovery is ludicrous. The Affordable

Care Act, if given a chance, will bring down the cost of health care,

and has already extended coverage to millions who otherwise would not

have it. The regulations put in place after the Wall street collapse,

if fully enacted, will lessen the chances of another collapse and hold

the one-percent and corporations more accountable and less able to

hide their wealth. The conservative playbook appears to be one of

unbridaled greed and advantage, and when things go south, blame

everyone and everything else. Brown’s column is a good example of

that.
