DEAR EDITOR: I urge my members of Congress, Sen. Bennet, Sen. Gardner, and Rep. Neguse to speak out against the deplorable, unsanitary, and unsafe conditions in which migrants are being held at our borders. We must call these facilities what they are — concentration camps, which by definition are camps where civilians are detained indefinitely without a trial. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves.
As their constituent, I demand that my members of Congress act to provide adequate care for the people fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries. The U.S. has always been a safe haven and a refuge for the oppressed. I have a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old, and I have to think if the kids at the border looked like them — white skin, green eyes — our outrage would be much greater.
Congress must do what it takes to muster the compassion and anger needed to stop this slow-motion atrocity from continuing.
I am in anguish about this. I hope Congress is, too.
