LETTER: Gov. Jared Polis deserves praise for attention to child care

EDITOR: As the Director of Sunshine Academy, a local early learning center, I had the opportunity to engage Governor Jared Polis this week during a Democratic National Convention event on the importance of child care. The Governor was a keynote speaker at Save the Children Action Network’s Democratic National Convention event, “Saving Child Care.”

Child care is an industry that is critical to our economy, allowing essential workers and employees across sectors to provide the goods and services we all depend on. And, quality child care is good for kids. Research shows that children who attend quality early learning programs reap the benefits with academic success and even increased lifetime earnings.

Across the country, we are poised to lose 4.5 million child care slots, and more than 80,000 in Colorado. This is because child care centers cannot weather the extended closures caused by COVID-19, and other demands on their already razor thin profit margins.

Governor Polis has made exemplary efforts to address this crisis. I thank the governor for his leadership and efforts to support the early learning sector in Colorado. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Polis has helped direct critical state and federal resources to the child care sector and has leant his administration’s expertise to help ensure children maintain access to quality child care during this crisis. He showed additional support for the sector during his remarks at the “Saving Child Care event.”

As an early childhood professional I commend the governor for his support of the early learning sector and call on all Colorado elected officials to help find solutions to the child care crisis facing our state.
