The politics of immigration are ugly. A tact being taken by some anti-immigrant groups goes beyond ugly and has become dangerous.
Aurora, among a handful of other Colorado communities, has been included on lists of what these groups dub “sanctuary cities.” The moniker is supposed to mean that these cities use their power to not only look the other way at illegal immigrants, but in some way actively provide a place where illegal immigrants can live unfettered by their citizen status.
It’s a bogus, political attempt to undermine tried and true public safety and security protocols used in most towns and cities across the country.

Groups such as Sanctuary Cities (www.SanctuaryCities.net) say their purpose “is to gather news stories and articles to form a national sanctuary city resource (and) provide information on various cities, counties, and states that have chosen to defy federal law by not assisting in dealing with illegal immigrants.”
In reality, this group and ones similar to it are trying to extort places like Aurora because they have stated policies directing police not to act as immigration officers amid police work. The organization is made up of mostly extremists with clear ties to a wide range of similar anti-illegal immigrant groups, such as Minutemen Civil Defense Corps. What they want is to undo the wise moves that Aurora and the state have made in how to handle undocumented immigrants in the community.
In 2014, Colorado lawmakers repealed a 2006 law requiring police to report people they suspect are illegal immigrants. Creating the 2006 law was an illogical and bad political move that really never saw enforcement.
Aurora police have worked hard to ensure that the city’s large undocumented community understands that police are here to uphold the law and help everyone, no matter their residency status. They realized that making police de facto immigration officers would push a new class of victims into the dark and create a dangerous situation for all of Colorado. This isn’t about providing sanctuary to illegal immigrants, it’s about protecting all of us, and preventing a free-for-all by criminals only too happen to prey on anyone they think might not be a citizen.
If Sanctuary Cities had their way, illegal and even legal Hispanic immigrants would avoid police at all costs if officers were a hot line to Immigration and Customs Enforcement squads — meaning they won’t call the cops when they know about a crime or even if they’re victims of a crime. It won’t take long before criminals figure this out and start targeting all Hispanics for robberies and rapes, knowing that most won’t dare to call police for fear of being deported. Everyone in the country that even remotely looks Latino would be at an increased risk of being robbed or attacked. Immigrants would start living underground lives, minimizing their contact with the rest of the community. An illegal immigrant involved in even a minor traffic accident would likely run from the scene, rather than take a chance of being deported.
Since there is no accurate database of citizenship, there is no way to quickly and accurately assess citizen status. By design, police don’t have access to personal information without first obtaining a warrant. We don’t want police assessing matters of immigration or citizenship, nor do police want to be involved in such matters. Aurora and Colorado realistically address the fact that millions of illegal immigrants are here, and they’re here to stay. Ensuring that police aren’t de facto immigration officers and other state laws allowing for illegal immigrants to obtain driver licenses, simply make for a safer Colorado for everyone.

May I ask the staff at Aurora Sentinel, ‘do you love America’? ‘do you salute the American flag’? ‘do you sing the national anthem, and rise when you do so’?
Well, let me tell you something about ALL these illegals into America, they do NONE of these, America is just some place to come and take advantage of, they could care less about our laws, our traditions, our culture, They care only about a buck, and spit on the country that affords them that buck.
Find some pride in America Aurora Sentinel staffers, think, just a bit, before you rant about how poorly these interlopers are treated here.
You have to love the words this team picks to describe anyone who wants to see this country tighten up and enforce it’s immigration laws.
Where are the hard numbers that show how many illegals in Aurora have turned in criminals in their community? Let’s face it, very few illegals will EVER trust the police. It’s not as if the phone lines are lighting up at APD all day and night long with illegal immigrant tipsters helping the police catch the bad guys.
You can give an illegal the opportunity to obtain a drivers license but, that doesn’t mean they’ll go to the trouble of getting it or, keeping their vehicle insured. Besides, the criminal element among illegals, doesn’t want their name documented anywhere at all so, they will continue to live and drive here illegally.
I think trying to convince the citizens of Aurora that they don’t live in a sanctuary city is extremist and is just another ruse. It’s born from the anxiety of losing Federal funding once you’re identified as such.
Aurora isn’t being framed, it’s been fingered.

Only one time. So take opinion and call someone who cares.
most americans, even ones on welfare(i include social security and pension in that category too) are too afraid that they will lose those benefits that they are willing to vote for democrats who are taking this country down a dangerous path.
SS and pension plans are paid into by those receiving them now, savings, looking ahead. Welfare is just an drain by those who have paid nothing into the system, like those this article is about, illegals and uneducated folks with more children than sense.
Para 5 has 2nd sentence which is absolutely false, and detrimental to State of Colorado. as follow: quoted: In 2014, Colorado lawmakers repealed a 2006 law requiring police to report people they suspect are illegal immigrants. Creating the 2006 law was an illogical and bad political move that really never saw enforcement. end of quoted sentence.
I live in Aurora, Hoffman Heights. I was instrumental in that law being passed, in writing email to my friend at the time: Andy Romanoff, Speaker of House. I asked him in early June, by email “How many of our Colorado Departments Directors can certify that all of their employees are citizens of Colorado, or of USA?” –
Andy Romanoff and I was on very good terms, as he attended UVC meetings where I had been Secretary 2001 – 2005. We continued to exchange emails for long time after that, and I found him very responsive, and he did a great job in House to keep balanced legislation.
In October of that year, Sheriff of Arapahoe County arrived at H-G Blossoms Auditorium for townhouse early to put out re-election signs, and he and I had about 40 plus minutes together, privately before meeting. I told him of that email and he said “So that is where that question came from?”. He then told me he was one of first to be questioned by legislators, and assured them, his deputies were all citizens. He said that interested him, since 23% of his inmates at County Jail were illegal aliens, serving felony terms. He repeated that to the meeting, and told us that some directors hedged their answers, which surprised him. That was hot issue in 2006, after several years of problems in Arapahoe County.
Following law passed, after 1 July 2006, 8 of 16 houses on my block went vacant during the night, in next 3 – 4 months. I had neighbors on both sides of me, LEGAL family on south, getting citizenship of young couple with 2 small children. House on north had 13 (age 20 to 30 bachelors, loud cars, 13 vehicles coming and going at all times of day and night, squealing tires, loud confrontations, and police coming several times, but no actions taken for them to move. No discernible jobs either, with only one who could speak some English, cars with Sonora, Mexico decals sunbaked into paint.
With 8 houses going vacant, some filled again in the night for 3-4 months, then vacant again, sat vacant through into 2008, then sold as fixer-uppers by lender agents, or at auction. By 2010 all houses in my neighborhood dropped from $186,000 brackets , to less than $100,000. Just now rising back above $150,000 in January of next year. My house, with $28,000 spent for new roof, new furnace, new doors and windows, and storage areas, (all energy compliant, giving me my entire IRS withholding back that year – First time ever since 1945).
But with that, my house was dropped to $92,000, then to $106,500. Now back to $150,000 next January.
MY POINT FOLLOWS: THAT LAW LED TO WHOLE STRING OF 3/4 TON AND 1 TON DUALLY PICKUPS, PULLING 1 OR 2 TRAILERS, HEADED SOUTH WITH $75.00 PERMIT FROM MEXICAN CONSULATE OFFICE IN DENVER. I DON’T KNOW WHICH CONTRY THEY HEADED BACK TO, BUT FIRST COUNTRY WOULD BE MEXICO, WITH SOME GOING ON TO CENTRAL AMERICA OR SOUTH AMERICA. THERE IS A ROAD THERE NOW, YOU KNOW. ROUGH, HARD DRIVE, OR BY FERRY. BUT THAT LAW WAS OBSERVED, UNTIL FOLLOWING TWO ADMINISTRATIONS DECIDED IT WAS WRONG. —————THEY DID NOT ASK ME, OR OTHERS OF MY PEER GROUP OF LOSING RETIREMENT ASSETS. And they also did not check out the houses. House to north of me, sold for $89,000 on location. Tenants had not paid rent, by-passed electric and water meters, destroyed front and rear lawns by parking vehicles on them, and destroyed house. Rebuilt inside with new electrical fixtures, new furnace (8 year furnace sold for trash by those tenants) and all walls had to be replaced, then all painted. Sold for $150,000 last year to present owner. Couple on south side, lost their house to foreclosure, but stayed on until December 2014 as tenants, at higher rent then their payment. Sold In January 2015 for $150,000 but now rented again to quiet tenants, at much higher rent.
SUGGEST SOMEONE FIND OUT HOW MANY PERMITS WERE SOLD BY MEXICAN CONSULATE OFFICE, IN 2007-2008 TO HAUL HOUSEHOLD GOODS SOUTH ACROSS BORDER. Then report, whether that law had teeth in 2006-2007. Lets have some honest reporting on this matter. Immigration laws are not broken. They are not being enforced. (side note: Amendment 14 does not confer citizenship on illegal aliens or anyone else, who still has allegiance to other countries, or entities, and never was confer such on illegal alien babies born here for that purpose. (And before anyone questions me, as before: All of my ancestors came here legally under laws, statutes, policies, contracts, at that time. Wife had Grandmother hung as Witch in Salem, MA in 1600s. Mine came in 1800s era from Europe, and we have documented proof.
Well I’m glad I am not the only one in Aurora with some common sense and AMERICAN values. I am however thankful that I can pick up the hard copy of the Aurora Sentinel at my local library. I now have a good solid supply of litter box liner. 🙂

“Aurora police have worked hard to ensure that the city’s large undocumented community understands that police are here to uphold the law and help everyone, no matter their residency status.”
The police are here to uphold the law yet sanctuary policies are in place to ignore the law. When it comes to marijuana laws, it is often said that “it is still illegal under Federal law” when wishing to enforce it yet when it come to Federal immigration laws it doesn’t seem to matter.
