Braced for criticism, Aurora is poised for success when it comes to a city becoming increasingly diverse.
Aurora is unveiling a three-year strategic plan on how to deal with and capitalize on the growing number of immigrants and refugees calling the state’s third-largest city home.
It’s a solid plan that is only the beginning, and offers a wide range of opportunities to benefit all of Aurora.
That’s the upside of a formula that focuses on the city’s new GlobalFest, a push to reinvigorate its sister cities program and, most important, how to help immigrants integrate into Aurora.
The downside comes from the senseless politics clouding the issue of immigration. We understand the valid debate on issues such as the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing citizenship to anyone born in the United States. And the debate over how seriously we should protect our borders from those trying to enter the country illegally. This comprehensive plan doesn’t address those issues.
But the country has, by design and by default, decided the fate of more than 10 million undocumented residents in the United States, most of them from Mexico, Central and South America. Unable to create any kind of comprehensive legislation addressing the problem, President Barack Obama has begun a series of administrative maneuvers that make it clear: Most of these immigrants are not going to be ejected. There is no practical or humane way to make it happen, even if Congress took the unwise position to try and make it happen.
While there is plenty of political hyperbole and intimidation, almost 20 years has now passed since the issue of undocumented immigrants became a serious problem. Cities like Aurora have no choice but to find a way to deal with immigration issues while Congress wastes more time and money and does absolutely nothing.
So Aurora has reiterated its philosophy, shared by almost every other major U.S. city, to ensure police do not handle immigration status issues. It’s a policy critical in ensuring the safety of residents and police alike. It’s also prompted a host of questionable activist groups to try and tab Aurora and Denver “sanctuary cities.” It’s ludicrous, and it’s dangerous by itself. And it makes the job of dealing with tens of thousands of immigrants, legal and otherwise, speaking more than 100 different languages, even more difficult. Wary of trying to walk through a political minefield, the city has done a commendable job at outlining important issues, such as the need for translators and above all, ways to communicate with immigrants about how to enjoy and participate in all that Aurora and America offers.
The plan also underscores the need for cooperation among schools, the city and all government agencies in helping immigrant families integrate into our culture and systems, becoming successful and independent from services. Schools are often the nexus of opportunity and problems.
Above all, the city’s plan helps all of Aurora understand the economic and cultural opportunities so many immigrants bring the city. It’s important we help these new residents become successful entrepreneurs and employees, and that we all understand and take advantage of the value of the economic contribution these residents make to the region.
The city’s plan is a solid start in moving Aurora toward making the most out of its rich immigrant community, and prevent and solve problems that are inevitable.
The job for other residents is to fight back against senseless political malfeasance trying to upend this plan. And that starts right here.

‘undocumented’? Nay, ILLEGAL! Trespassers, outlaws, scofflaws, etc. Aurora is wrong to ‘help with immigrants’ that are not here legally, and I will NOT VOTE for any councilperson who supports this effort.
We know we know. Why don’t you give yourself an enema and sleep it off. You’re getting rather oily!
35 years ago, President Reagan gave amnesty to 8 MILLION illegals, mostly from Mexico, saying ‘never again’ (and later said it was a mistake, thought it would impede others from breaking into the country, it only made it worse) now we have another 12 million or more, and now the liberals are saying, as Aurora now says, ‘we must help them’ and I say NO WE DO NOT, WE NEED TO THROW THEM OUT, ALL OF THEM!

gofastgo’s commentary is a demonstration of how many ways one can say “I hate non-white and/or gay people.”
Your hatred is gross. And because you’re doing it hiding behind an anonymous username, it’s also pathetic.
This isn’t hate, this is common sense. We have laws in this country, you must have forgotten in your liberal-think, or no-think mentality. Common Sense has taken a back seat to political correctness, ‘let ’em all in, we have room’ And jobs, what of those jason smith? BLM, another favorite of mine, the police, those that protect you and I, ‘fry ’em like bacon’, this from a race that together with Hispanics, make up 70% of our prison populations. You would say, ‘wrongly arrested and convicted’ and I would say Horseshit! Go to a welfare office, tell me what you see there, okay? Prove my pathetic self wrong, but you can’t, liars can figure, but figures don’t lie.
You’re correct about one issue, I believe in marriage between one man and one woman, but, fools like yourself think that ‘anything goes’ is the way to live, without laws, without rules, without jobs, who needs ’em.
goo man keeps whining about “liberals”. It’s his “horseshit” attitude actually. All psycho babble all the time. goo man is right on one point. He is definitely a “pathetic self”.
Why does the Aurora Centinal hate immigrants. US law defines an immigrant as a “legal alien” or LPR. Immigrants are in the USA legally by definition of the word. I am an immigrant. We know these things. The city needs to force these folks to assimilate by learning English and following rules
Gary, I don’t understand how you got hate out of this article. The article outlines how the city is trying to embrace its immigrant population. I think the message you’re missing is: You’re welcome!
No, it started long ago Gary, with signage in Spanish and labels on food products also, of course there’s always ‘press one for English’ This was done primarily for illegals, not folks who immigrated through proper channels.

How about press 2 for moron as in goo man.
This is a nation built by immigrants. I welcome them, and their American children. BTW, they do learn English and assimilate. Signs in Spanish are a result of American businesses reaching their market. Mexico is our third largest trading partner, ahead of Germany, France… what other languages do you want to speak?
The 5 who moved into house next to me in Hoffman Heights soon blossomed to 13. All from Sonoro, Mexico by the sun burned icon burned into back of cars. Only one spoke broken English, with Spanish inflection, was hard to understand, but he understood English better than speaking. (between 20 and 30 ages, as a guess). No discernible jobs, but came and went at all times of day and night, one to a car – all 13 drove their own car. In almost a year, I don’t remember seeing more than single occupant when arriving or leaving. One Sunday morning , one drove in with front end of small, white sedan smashed, leaking fluids, with whole front end bent and mangled, but still driving, at 7:20 AM. By Tuesday night UPS and FedX trucks had brought cardboard boxes, and that car had new radiator, new fenders, new front end, new headlights, and looked like new, even painted during the night, in a slightly cream colored white. Never saw them working on it, or heard them, but it was between our houses, on their driveway, outside my bedroom window.—————————
None were married, but I was awakened on some early mornings, by music during spring in what had to be some kind of mating or fertility ritual. Young (looked like 13 to 17 year old females) with almost naked dancing. Not excessively loud, and with just me and the cat-and -dog here then, I went back to bed and sleep. Near 80 then, I was long past any interest, though I see some old characters on computer who must be taking Viagra or something stronger. Married 63 years now, 86 and wife 80, those days are long gone, so the disgusting displays of nudity or near nudity on television make channel browsing not for me.
Wife and I never went into the swinging, swapping, or other mating practices that seem so cherished by certain folks. To each his own, I say. Not for me. But those guys trashed $186,000 house, to sell when they moved, and after lenders got a buyer, for $89,000 , as fixer-upper. And boy, did it need fixing up. Sold for $150,000 year ago. Those types of illegal aliens, living multiple as 2,3,4 families in one family house, brought whole appraisal for this part of Aurora, and only now climbing back toward higher levels. When these guys moved, Gov. Owens enforced new laws on residency, and I SAW A LOT OF SELF DEPORTATION BACK SOUTH OF THE BORDER BY THOSE WHO NEVER INTENDED TO BE CITIZENS. AND THOSE LAWS WORKED. RITTER AND HICKENLOOPER IGNORED THEM, THEN THEY WERE RESCINDED BY PRESENT COLORADO LEGISLATORS. So don’t tell me we gained as citizens. My home dropped from $186,500 in 2006 to $92,000 by 2010, then rose to $106,500 in 2012. On January 1, 2016 it will rise to $150,000. And I maintained my house, and added new furnace, new roof, new energy efficient doors and windows, and storage space. Spent $28,000 that year, and was only year since I started paying income tax all those years ago, that I got back my entire years withholding that year. Not even close to the $28,000 spent, either. (That has to be Democrat economics)
Your personal anecdotes, while mildly entertaining, hold exactly squat on the “who gives a sh!t” meter. Mostly you come across as a bitter old man.
And just what are you? Then you list your address and I hope Hickenlooper sends about 50 families to live on your block. And be sure to tell your neighbors how you welcome illegals, who commit misdemeanors in crossing the borders with out permission, and then felonies when they buy false identification of others. And they can drain your bank accounts, if you have any.
Somebody tried extracting over $2,000 from my wifes CU account and that was denied. CU spokesperson called my wife at 5:30 AM last week to inform her, and of the denial. Air Canada w/d so hard to tell who, where, etc.
You may think that is old don’t give a xxxx from a mean old man. You don’t know mean old man until I really get crossed. So go take a long walk, off a short pier.
Ouch, you are such a hateful old coot. I just don’t know what to say. Better you just keep your toys and stay home.
Those economics are the result of your Republican Bush-Cheney years. They broke the economy. It was gang-busters under Clinton.
Quit blaming Bush Cheney. Those economics was entirely the increase of illegal aliens by Obama invitation, and not allowing border agents or patrols to do their jobs. Aurora was loaded with illegal aliens until Gov. Owens forced legisators back in June 2006, passed laws effective 1 July 2006. And the pickup trucks started selling to point it was reported on news and in Denver Post.
I had Mexicans in houses on both sides of me, in Hoffman Heights. Legal on the south side, young couple with two small children. Her younger brother, and 2 uncles who had visited them, here year before and I met them, was assassinated in Mexico because they refused to pay extortion to drug cartel. Guns used sold by Fast and Furious to Drug cartel, by our DOJ and their people.
Ones on the north was into something. Left 2 truck loads of trash, house destroyed, and water-electric meters by-passed. Found by energy workers when they came to remove meters with houses vacant. Lender company hired a cleanup crew that removed trash, and old furniture, then the guy who bought made repairs, before moving in, and completing them. That was his work, with he and father on papers.
You may not like my stories, but you have the problem. Others had same experience with this, and do not welcome ILLEGAL aliens. Legal, do the paperwork, qualify , just my ancestors did, and so did those in my family tree now. Son is married to half Japanese. 1st wife was 1/4 Mexican, but grandfather and mother were legal immigrants, years ago. And he absolutely refused being called Spanish, Latino, or any other race. He was Mexican, and a very proud American. Both deceased now.
And my son and wife now, stay in touch with his ex-wife and her husband in California. When wife and I visited there, we visited her and husband, same as my son and present wife. I am not a mean old man. I am old, but very sociable until insulted, trashed, or people like you want to argue or pick a fight. You are an Axx.
And you don’t know what you are talking about. So you have to be a troll,
I bet you have some gay friends, too!
It is appreciative to helping the immigrants in bringing them to the main street American culture.
