EDITOR: As a local grocer committed to serving our customers for more than 80 years in Colorado, we were disappointed that we could not remain in the Aurora Highland Shopping Center at Buckley and Mexico. Closing our Safeway store at this location and two others in Aurora was a difficult decision made after long and careful deliberation. Since the closing of the stores in late June, we have worked diligently with our real estate team and property owners to create viable options for the three locations. Our site within the Aurora Highlands location has been the center of discussion with the local neighborhood groups and surrounding businesses. We understand their concerns and want to provide a few updates.
We have plans to lease the site to a new business. Our company is very close to securing a new tenant in the Highlands Shopping Center location and we are confident this tenant will bring value and activity to the site. We are working through the process to make sure we get this tenant in place quickly.
Closing a store is never easy. We understand that changes – like the ones we’ve had to make to ensure we can continue to be a strong business and community member – can be disruptive. Since closing the store at Buckley and Mexico, our plan has always been to put a new tenant in place, while continuing to maintain the property and invest in and update our remaining stores. In fact, we have plans to invest significantly in our Aurora Albertsons store over the next few months.
We are proud and fortunate to employ more than 400 people in our community and we will continue to be a strong partner for our City and neighborhoods. Like you, we are here for the long term. We remain committed to our customers, neighbors and surrounding businesses and we hope to announce a new tenant soon.

What a crock of canned deflection. Everyone hates you … go away. I, along with many others, will continue to boycott your other store. I hope it goes belly up, too.
Also, if the new tenant is either a thrift store, a dollar store, or a gym, then it is obvious you DON’T care about the community.
