MOREHEAD, Ky. | A defiant Kentucky clerk said Monday she will not interfere with her deputies if they keep issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but she declared they will not be authorized by her and questioned their validity.

It was Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ first day back in the office after a stint in jail for five days for defying a federal judge.

“I don’t want to have this conflict. I don’t want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don’t want to be a whipping post,” Davis said, reading from a hand-written statement outside the courthouse where she works. “I am no hero. I’m just a person that’s been transformed by the grace of God, who wants to work, be with my family. I just want to serve my neighbors quietly without violating my conscience.”

Davis, an Apostolic Christian, stopped issuing licenses after the Supreme Court effectively legalized gay marriage. U.S. District Judge David Bunning held her in contempt and ordered her to jail. In her absence, her deputies issued at least seven licenses to gay couples and altered the forms to exclude Davis’ name.

The deputy clerk who issued the licenses, Brian Mason, said Monday that will continue to hand out the licenses despite his boss’s objections.

The governor, the attorney general and the county attorney have said the licenses are valid. Only Davis and her attorneys claim otherwise.

Davis, who believes gay marriage is a sin, has become a hero to many conservative Christians after she stopped issuing the licenses.

On Friday, Davis’ attorneys filed an appeal seeking another delay in issuing licenses.

In their motion to the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, her attorneys argued that all the same-sex couples who sued Davis for a license received one from her deputies while she was in jail. Therefore, they said, her office should not be required to issue them to any more couples once she returns to work.

Bunning wrote that his mandate to issue licenses applied to all couples, not only those who filed suit. But Davis’ lawyers allege that order was issued improperly, and again have asked for a delay.

The tension in Rowan County reached fever pitch last week, as protesters, presidential candidates and news crews from across the county descended on the small town of Morehead.

  1. :Try reading Ezekiel and find out just how non moral this is. And if anyone wants to argue state versus federal, as they are, do some basic searches on internet of that? Marriage, civil versus federal. Sickening, and sleazy for the get go. I know who the immoral, ones are. Just did not know there was so many of them, But Google Search or Microsoft search is very outspoken on subject of entire world. Been problem since planet earth formed,

    1. The Pharisee, standing erect, prayed as follows by himself: “‘O God, I thank Thee that I am not like other people–I am not a thief nor a cheat nor an adulterer, nor do I even resemble this tax-gatherer. Luke 18:11

  2. Even Dictators, Kings and Queens, Tribal leaders, and all the other governments, communist, fascist, show government trying to establish and maintain family marriages, that are of one flesh, with male leaving his family to start a new family with his wife. Reason we see Europe with church ceremonies, and legal ceremonies, and also the laws are written to prevent close relatives from marrying each other, with examples given. So keep on with changes of last 7 years, but they will be changed back, with all the problems that have arisen so far. Judges now refusing divorces, with supremes power grabbing marriage, which never has been federal in this country. Reason Chief Justice John Roberts said the opinion, WAS NOT OF THE CONSTITUTION.
How stupid of people to argue that? Overthrow by opinion, just as Roe vs Wade, and other power grabs over the years. As Teddy Roosevelt, so famously said, the Justice has made his decision, now let him enforce it. Lincoln ignored Supreme Court , just as FDR did after some decisions. In fact, tried to pack the court, to reduce their influence and decision ease with fewer justices. FDR had many of his policies overthrown, even after his death. And that will happen with this one.

    1. A bit pedantic there, Frank. However, welcome to the 21st century. We’re a bit more open-minded here in the future. No worries though, thanks for taking care of the world up until now; sit back, relax- we can take it from here.

      1. Do you notice when the wind blows right through from ear to ear?
I just don’t want to go where you are going, since it always gets worse. I have seen what teenage, black boys and girls can do and think of, when they don’t have supervision.
Those with discipline in their youth, grow up, get eductiion and I have taught many of them to work on missiles, airplanes, nuclear weapons, and other electrical and electronic fields. Even Satellite Communications between 1970 and 1976, when I retired. My students did not have problems in learning and working together as teams. One whole class, mixed races went through about 8 blocks of electronic fundamentals, and whole class went to Guam, to work on the MACE B missile for US Air Force. Those have long since been retired, but that was fun class. When they graduated, I had a keg of beer in my 2 car garage, my small grade school children, thought they had gained whole group of older cousins, and enjoyed those guys. I gauged it just right, when beer was running out, still had food left, and one of my students, had his arm around my medium size Black Poodle (Pierre) and was teaching my dog some Serbo-Croatian words. They cleared base next week, went home on leave, then went to Guam.
Was a fun Class. Wonder today where they are?
Doubt you have that kind of memories. I have 85 years of such.

        1. Sounds like you had a good life.

That said, you are the one who seems to have a prurient interest below the belt. Hence your never-ending tirades on Biblical strictures and pinkos. Don’t forget the commies, too.

I know you hate being schooled on Constitutional law, but “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts”.

You’re a creeper because of the things you say like “Now why would anyone prefer a sheep, or their dog , or horse or mule, with soft, crudely female humans so willing?” in response to a woman expressing her political views in a public forum.

          “There you go again”

It seems like you need your meds, some food, and a nap.
