WASHINGTON | A major abortion-rights group is criticizing one of its strongest allies in Congress, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, over what it says are “disappointing and ill-advised” remarks.
In an interview published Wednesday by Roll Call, Pelosi defends a woman’s right to abortion. The California Democrat also says she does not believe in abortion on demand.
NARAL Pro-Choice America says in a written statement that abortion rights are under frequent attack by lawmakers and that advocates need their supporters “to speak with a clear and strong voice.”
The group says Pelosi should not be using what it calls “twisted GOP talking points.”
Abortion-rights groups criticized Pelosi last March for agreeing to include language curbing abortions at community health centers in a bipartisan compromise bill that revamped how Medicare reimburses doctors.
