AURORA | A wheelchair-bound homeless woman was killed Thursday near East Colfax Avenue and Chambers Road, police said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was attacked around 10 p.m. behind a business at 15057 E. Colfax Ave., police said.

Aurora police spokeswoman Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said a shopper at a nearby grocery store was loading her groceries into her car when she saw a woman in a wheelchair come out from behind the buildings.

The woman in the wheelchair appeared to have injuries to her upper torso and the shopper called 911, police said. The victim was rushed to an area hospital where she later died.

Detectives later found what they believe is the crime scene behind the business.

Investigators believe the woman was stabbed, but they are waiting for the results of an autopsy to confirm that, Carlson said.

The victim was homeless but had been staying in the neighborhood and officers who worked in the area knew her, Carlson said.

Police don’t have any suspects yet, Carlson said, but they are hopeful some of the other homeless people in the neighborhood might know the woman and be able to tell investigators if she was involved in any disputes.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information to call Detective Todd Fredericksen at 303-739-6106. Callers can remain anonymous by calling CRIME STOPPERS at 720-913-STOP (7867). They may be eligible for a $2,000 reward.
