AURORA | Final but uncertified vote tallies in Aurora’s city council at-large race will trigger an automatic recount the last week of November, according to Arapahoe County election officials.
As of Thursday with new vote tallies from Adams and Arapahoe counties, 54 votes separate retired Air Force Colonel David Gruber and former Regional Transportation Director Tom Tobiassen. Douglas County has not updated their Aurora vote tallies since Nov. 8.

State law requires a recount when two candidates are within 0.5 percent apart, and at this point, Gruber’s slight lead makes that threshold, said Arapahoe County clerk’s office spokeswoman Haley McKean.
She said the three affected clerks will meet after all votes are canvassed, and that triggers the automatic recount. She speculated that it’s possible if not likely that the recount will be completed in time for the Aurora City Council’s slated swearing in ceremony Dec. 4
The clerks have until Dec. 7, however, to certify election results.
