NEW YORK | The Small Business Administration said it will relocate six of its regional offices in so-called “sanctuary cities,” part of a broader Trump administration effort to crack down on cities that it deems have immigrant-friendly policies.
In a statement Thursday, SBA administrator Kelly Loeffler said offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York City and Seattle will be relocated to “less costly, more accessible locations that better serve the small business community and comply with federal immigration law.”
No details were given about where the offices might be moving to.
There’s no legal definition for sanctuary city policies, but they generally limit cooperation by local law enforcement with federal immigration officers. Courts have repeatedly upheld the legality of sanctuary laws.
The announcement came a day after Republican members of Congress hammered four Democratic mayors Wednesday about their so-called sanctuary city policies, accusing them of endangering Americans and threatening to prosecute local officials.
The SBA was established in 1953 to offer resources to small businesses and helps administer small business and disaster recovery loans. It played a crucial role during the pandemic, helping distribute small business aid. It has at least one district office in each state, and some larger states, like California and Texas, have several. Offices provide counseling, training, and other resources that provide support for small business owners.
Separately, the Loeffler said SBA loans won’t be eligible to businesses that have owners “in whole or in part” who aren’t U.S. citizens. The SBA doesn’t give out direct loans, except when they’re related to disasters, but it works with lenders to distribute loans to small businesses. The loans typically have better rates than traditional loans.
The SBA did not respond to a request for comment for more details.

The Colorado state leadership and the Denver city leadership have both proven they can’t be trusted to honor the U.S. Constitution and the federal government’s sole jurisdiction over immigration and national security.
No one should be surprised that Trump is punishing Colorado. And he’s just getting started.
Jeff, Denver is just following the tenets of Christianity by feeding the hungry, clothing the cold, and housing the tired that were bussed here from Texas. If that’s providing sanctuary, count me in! Also, there are limits to how police can assist ICE. They are usually busy dealing with criminals of US citizenry, which has a significantly higher rate of criminals per capita than the migrant population. If you aren’t gonna read the stats, the least I can do is help you to understand the situation!
Not buying it Mr. Kane. The Christianity bit is simply what his high-powered lawyer consultants told him to say because it might play well with the public. To my knowledge of scripture, Jesus talked about how individuals should behave toward one another. He didn’t criticize Roman law. He encouraged his followers to obey Roman law. Christian’s can easily follow the teachings of Jesus by sending all their wealth to agencies that help their fellow man in Mexico, Central and South America.
The Constitution prevents Federal Government from forcing local and state police from enforcing Federal laws. It does not say that these law enforcement agencies can’t voluntarily assist and cooperate with Federal agencies.
Although Denver’s political and economic actions at the city level have made it fully know it holds Sanctuary City status or as Mayor Johnston now with his perverse logic insist “welcoming city” which otherwise looks to be a disqualifier as suitable for continuing as the SBA agency pad. So then how about Aurora as new digs for this federal SBA activity? Is the City of Aurora when the dust settles really much different than Denver and the Johnston operation? Aurora has condemned the troublesome apartments and now fully taken on the responsibility of housing hundreds of boarders. Do we even know the exact number? Details the Sentinel might find of interest someday. Aurora city management have said they have made arraignments and found new places for these folks to live, thus opening the city check-book for this cost. What’s this new Aurora managed relocation policy look like? There’s a most obvious issue and still left undone in this mess. With all this city largess, did anyone in the city in this process ask to include accurate vetting? You know, things we have to answer, like maybe asking for documentation of citizenship and birthplace? I seriously doubt Aurora management put much effort into vetting, if they did any. So…. can Aurora be trusted that they are really much different than Denver, if not, no SBA for you!
The guaranteed loans by the SBA through banks carry an additional fee to cover the guarantee, so the resulting rate is higher, not lower. The guarantee is needed if a client is undercapitalized or undercollateralized. I was a director at two SBDCs in the Houston area and worked for 7 years with clients to secure funding for startups and expansions. Rates depend more on the 5 Cs of credit ‘ 1) Capital available from the business owner, 2) Credit score, 3) Collateral available for recovery in case of default, 4) Competence (knowing the business), and 5) Condition of the business economy. Rates and availability of capital vary based on these criteria and the bank’s willingness to lend within a business category.
Is there no end to Trump’s vindictive whims. He’s off on another temper tantrum like an adolescent who always has to have his way. Trump is grade A stupid. Let’s hear it for the mayors of these so called “sanctuary cities” who are standing up to this odious bully and the Republicans who support his MAGA garbage. Trump sticking his nose into another pet peeve for which he is woefully lacking in common sense. He makes these wild rants and his MAGA faithful lap it up as absolute truth. What a bunch of clowns.
Well Kane, you get the superficial situation and have some knowledge of the government and the SBA as well. Not to mention you call yourself a Christian.
Here’s the real scoop for you, Colorado and especially Denver. For the next four years the Donald will punish Colorado, right or wrong in any way he can. Right or wrong, like it or not, he will because he can. A government, left wing educated person, like yourself, will just continue to complain and complain. Colorado governments, for the sake of it’s citizens and growth should just, “shut up and suck it up”.
I know that is hard for liberals to understand. Woe is us in Colorado.
I am actually fine with Colorado being punished for defying Federal laws. When a State legislature passes laws preventing local police departments from cooperating with ICE agents, that is the definition of a “sanctuary state.” Some of us are old enough to remember when President Kennedy sent federal troops to the University of Alabama to enforce federal law when George Wallace blocked entry of Black students from the University. If such an action would have been taken against the first city defying U.S. immigration laws, we would not have the widespread problem we have now. Mayor Johnston, and many other mayors, are acting like a lords running their own fiefdoms separate and independent of U.S. law.
