AURORA | After a lengthy investigation police have filed charges against a teenage boy who investigators say caused an April crash that left a 3-month-old girl and her grandfather dead.
The juvenile, whose name and exact age was not released, will be charged with two counts of careless driving resulting in death and driving without a license for the April 28 crash that killed Kataley Ramerez-Cespedes and her grandfather, Humberto Ramerez-Lopez, 40.
The crash happened April 28 near Interstate 225 and East 17th Avenue. Police said the pickup the boy was driving slammed into Ramerez-Lopez’s SUV, which was southbound on the I-225 off-ramp.
The two juveniles in the pickup were not hurt, police said.
Initially, police said they believed the truck had the green light when it passed through the intersection but said they would continue to investigate and search for witnesses.
In a statement, Aurora police Lt. Jeff Turner, who oversees the department’s traffic section, said Detective Terry Allen led the investigation and eventually determined that the driver of the pick-up truck failed to stop for a red light. The truck was also speeding, police said, doing 37 to 42 mph in a 25-mph zone.
