AURORA | A suspect in an aggravated robbery was taken into custody Sunday, June 26, after police were called to an Aurora apartment that led to an hours-long SWAT situation.
Aurora police officers were originally called to the 14400 block of East Mississippi Avenue about 8:15 a.m. Sunday on a report of a weapons violation. Officers were told a male with a gun robbed another male and ran to a townhome in the area. Police believed the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence with a weapon.
A female occupant of the apartment exited just as officers were attempting to make contact with the suspect inside the apartment, according to Aurora police spokesman Sgt. Chris Amsler. Shortly thereafter, several other individuals — including the robbery suspect — exited the apartment upon officers’ orders.
The situation was escalated when an officer at the rear of the apartment saw a male try to leave through the back door before running back inside. Not knowing whether the male was armed or potentially dangerous, the Aurora police SWAT team was mobilized.
The SWAT team’s search of the residence did not yield any other individuals inside; however, two handguns were found. Police do not know if either handgun was the one used in the reported robbery.
The large contingent of Aurora police and SWAT team members staged in the area snarled traffic along Mississippi Avenue for most of the morning and early afternoon until the situation was resolved around 2:15 p.m.
The name of the robbery suspect has not been released.
