AURORA | A portion of South Havana Street will remain closed for up to two weeks to accommodate stormwater pipe construction, creating a traffic obstacle on one of the city’s biggest and busiest north-south thoroughfares.

Starting Tuesday, Aurora construction crews closed Havana at the north side of the intersection of South Parker Road, essentially through East Iliff Avenue. Southbound Havana traffic must turn into shopping centers between Iliff and Parker Road, or turn right, northbound, onto Parker. Northbound Havana traffic must turn left or right at Parker.

“Aurora Water’s contractor is on site replacing the stormwater pipe,” city officials said in a statement. The replacement is necessary because of a system failure in the area.

The closure could last as long as two weeks. The time of the project is dependent on weather.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and follow posted detour signs,”officials said.

On Tuesday, the closure prompted traffic jamming east and west of the intersection, and especially north, as well as on northbound Parker Road.

The city has indicated detours through the local commercial and residential neighborhoods to get around the closures.
