AURORA | A man arrested on a drunk driving charge in Aurora hanged himself Wednesday night in the Arapahoe County Jail, jail officials said.

According to a statement from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office, Jered Maes, 50, was found hanging from a noose fashioned from a bed sheet inside a cell around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.

“Deputies immediately removed the sheets and, along with medical personnel, began CPR. The inmate’s prognosis did not improve and the injuries sustained as a result of the inmate’s actions proved fatal,” the statement said.

Maes was booked into the jail July 27 after Aurora police arrested him on a DUI charge, the sheriff’s office said. He was being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.

The sheriff’s statement said the coroner and the sheriff’s office are investigating Maes’ death.
