AURORA | Two Aurora schools were briefly “locked out” Monday afternoon following a report of shots fired near East Colfax Avenue and Chambers Road.

Aurora police spokesman Officer Kenneth Forrest said the investigation started after multiple reports of shots fired near East 13th Avenue and Helena Street.

A short time after the reports Forrest said a male juvenile walked into a local hospital suffering a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The juvenile may be connected to the shooting, but Forrest said the circumstances remain under investigation.

No details on a potential suspect have been released but Forrest said police do not believe there is a threat to the community.

The incident where the gunshots were reported is a short distance from Hinkley High School but Forrest said there was no apparent connection between the school and the shooting.

As a precaution, Hinkley and nearby East Middle School were briefly placed on lockout, he said.

Aurora Public Schools tweeted around 1:15 p.m. that the lockout had been lifted but warned parents and students to expect an increased police presence in the area.
