AURORA | Metro Denver has been selected for one of three new regional United States Patent and Trademark Offices, the Commerce Department announced today.

Several officials, including Gov. John Hickenlooper and Sen. Michael Bennet, are set to discus the plan at a press conference on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora today.

Local officials have long lobbied for a regional patent office in Colorado, saying the facility would be a boon to local inventors and entrepreneurs.

Right now, the only place where inventors can get a patent for a new invention is at a patent office near Washington, D.C. Later this month the first satellite office will open in Detroit.

In 2014, offices are scheduled to open in Colorado, California and Texas.

It’s not clear where the new metro Denver office will be located.
