AURORA | Two weeks after an arsonist set fire to a north Aurora apartment building, killing two and injuring several others, police are again asking the public for help.

“We are encouraging people that live in the neighborhood or were visiting the neighborhood on August 6th to report anything they may have seen around the time of the fire and thought was suspicious,” Aurora police spokeswoman Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said in an email.

The Aug. 6 blaze at the Fitz Apartments near East 17th Avenue and Peoria Street killed Dom Chanhthavongsa, 64, and Bounhieng Thammavongsa, 59, after they couldn’t escape their fourth-floor apartment, officials said. The Adams County coroner said the couple died of smoke inhalation.

Fire investigators later ruled the blaze arson and said Aurora police detectives are investigating.

Carlson said no arrests have been made and none are anticipated in the near future.

Detectives continue to investigate, Carlson said, and are interviewing residents and waiting on results from forensic testing.

Carlson said investigators hope anyone who saw anything near the apartments Aug. 6 — even if it seems trivial — to contact police.

The Aurora Police Reward fund is offering up to $2,500 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the fire, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the tip line at 303-739-6118. Callers can also remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
