AURORA | Police are asking Arapahoe County prosecutors to charge Miguel Angel Licona-Ortega with first-degree murder in connection with the Saturday evening shooting death of a 23-year-old man at a northwest Aurora sports bar.

Police were called at about 7 p.m. Saturday to Tierra Maya Sports Bar and Grill, 455 Havana St., on reports of a shooting.

Police said Javier Alexander Chacon-Ortega  shot while outside the bar was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries, police said. Arapahoe County coroner officials said Chacon-Ortega sustained “multiple” gunshot wounds to his head.

The shooter left the scene, prompting a man-hunt.

According to an arrest affidavit, Licona-Ortega told police he shot Chacon-Ortega in the head multiple times because he believed Chacon-Ortega would kill him.

Police said they reviewed surveillance footage which showed Licona-Ortega shoot Chacon-Ortega in the back of the head as the pair walked outside the bar, apparently planning to fight each other. It wasn’t clear why the pair planned to fight but witnesses told police they had briefly lived together recently and Licona-Ortega told police Chacon-Ortega had been insulting him that evening at the bar.

On Sunday, police said Lincona-Ortega was responsible for the murder and released his arrest mug shot. Both men appeared to be from Honduras.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Agent Marc Yacano with the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit at 303.739.6090 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.7867.
